Democracy Friendly Schools Programme

Democracy Friendly Schools – Getting started together with our secondary schools

Dear colleague,

We’re excited to let you know how your school can get involved in our Democracy Friendly Schools programme in a way that works for you.

We’ve been working hard to develop a flexible approach to our programme. We’ve learned from young citizens, teachers, and others that it’s very much about doing what works for each individual school.

Based on this learning, we’re now ready to start working with all schools who have expressed an interest. You can get started anytime in the 2023 to 2024 school year.

Where here to support you

We provide two days of local democracy training for young people, delivered by us, which can be observed by school staff, with learning that can be shared peer-to-peer.

Pupils who complete our training will become Kirklees Youth Councillors.

How to get involved

We have an expression of interest form on our Democracy in Kirklees website, which schools are welcome to complete at any time to let us know that they’d like to join in with the programme (when they are ready). We also have more information on our website about the benefits of taking part:
